UFC Fight Night 33 preview: 60 pre-event facts about ‘Hunt vs. Bigfoot’ in Australia
The UFC is just days away from its annual trip down under as the octagon will touch down in Australia for “UFC Fight Night 33: Hunt vs. Bigfoot,” which takes place Saturday locally but airs live on Friday in North America.
The event, which airs on FOX Sports 1 with prelims on FOX Sports 2 and MMAjunkie, features a heavyweight main event between two of the division’s hardest hitters in Antonio Silva (18-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Mark Hunt (9-8 MMA, 4-2 UFC).
The five-round contest marks the third UFC main event for “Bigfoot” while Hunt steps under the bright lights of a UFC headliner for the first time in his career.
Having both suffered knockout losses in their most recent UFC appearances, victory is essential to remain relevant in the frequently evolving heavyweight division.
Outside of the main event, several fighters on the card are at a crossroads. Longtime UFC mainstays Mauricio Rua (21-8 MMA, 5-6 UFC), Ryan Bader (15-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) and Pat Barry (8-6 MMA, 5-6 UFC) all also enter the fight off of losses and need to rebound in the worst of ways.
With an event that features former champions, title challengers, “The Ultimate Fighter” winners, established veterans and hungry up-and-comers, UFC Fight Night 33 has a bit of something for everyone.
The card is rapidly approaching and with the help of FightMetric research analyst and live statistics producer Michael Carroll, here are 60 pre-fight facts about UFC Fight Night 33.
MAIN EVENT
Silva has been knocked out in four of his five professional defeats.
Silva’s past seven UFC/Strikeforce contests (win or lose) have ended by knockout.
Silva knocked out Alistair Overeem at UFC 156 despite being out-landed by 30 significant strikes, the third biggest deficit for a heavyweight who came back and finished an opponent.
Silva has landed 50.9 percent of his significant strikes from the clinch or ground position during his combined UFC and Strikeforce career.
Silva’s 28 significant strikes landed on Fedor Emelianenko in a 2011 Strikeforce fight are the most Emelianenko ever absorbed in an MMA fight.
Hunt has fought in Australia or Japan in five of his seven UFC appearances.
Hunt’s 81 percent takedown defense accuracy is the second highest in UFC heavyweight history. He’s stopped 17 of 21 attempts. Andrei Arlovski holds the UFC heavyweight record (89.5 percent).
Hunt has landed 83.9 percent of his significant strikes in the UFC to his opponents’ head, the second largest proportion in heavyweight history. Brendan Schaub (86 percent) tops all heavyweights.
Hunt’s 113 significant strikes landed against Yosuke Nishijima at PRIDE 31 stands as the single-fight record for the now-defunct promotion.
CO-MAIN EVENT
Rua’s 5-6 UFC record produces the lowest win percentage among top 10 ranked light heavyweight fighters. “Shogun” is winless (0-3) in his UFC career in fights that go to a decision.
Rua is on the first two-fight losing streak of his 29-bout career and has lost four of his past six fights overall.
Rua has defeated his opponent by knockout in 18 of his 21 professional victories, with 16 of those stoppages coming in the first round. All five of Rua’s UFC wins are by knockout.
Rua’s 14 knockout victories in UFC/PRIDE competition are the most ever in the weight class.
Rua’s 816 significant strikes landed in UFC/PRIDE competition are the second most in the weight class behind Quinton Jackson (933). His 52.1 percent significant striking accuracy is fourth highest among active light heavyweights and sixth highest in light heavyweight history.
Rua’s 191 total strikes landed against Dan Henderson at UFC 139 are the fifth most ever landed in a UFC light heavyweight fight.
Rua’s nine leg-lock-submission attempts in UFC/PRIDE competition are tied for third most in UFC/PRIDE history.
James Te Huna (16-6 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has been submitted in the first round of all but one of his career losses.
Te Huna’s average fight time of 7:38 is the third shortest among active light heavyweight fighters.
Te Huna’s 52.4 percent significant strike accuracy is the fifth highest rate in UFC light heavyweight history. His 65.6 percent significant strike defense rate is the seventh highest in 205-pound history.
REMAINING MAIN CARD
Bader enters the event with a 3-4 record in his past seven UFC fights. “Darth” has been stopped inside the distance in all four of his career defeats.
Bader is the owner of the fastest submission in UFC light heavyweight history, a 50-second tap-out of Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC on FOX 6.
Bader’s six knockdowns landed in light heavyweight competition are tied with “Shogun” for the fourth most in divisional history.
Bader’s three UFC knockout victories stemming from punches landed at distance are tied for the second most in light heavyweight history behind Chuck Liddell (nine).
Bader’s 71 percent significant strike defense rate is the second highest in UFC light heavyweight history (min. of five UFC fights). He absorbs just 1.63 significant strikes per minute, the third best rate among active light heavyweights (min. five fights).
Bader averages 3.08 takedowns per 15 minutes of fighting, the fifth highest rate among active light heavyweights. He’s taken down five of the seven opponents he’s attempted to take down.
Anthony Perosh (14-7 MMA, 4-4 UFC) enters the event with a 4-1 record in his past five UFC appearances.
Perosh, 41, is the second oldest fighter on the UFC roster behind Dan Henderson.
Perosh is one of just five 40-plus year old fighters in UFC history to earn a victory inside the octagon (Henderson, Cung Le, Mark Coleman, Randy Couture).
Perosh’s average fight time of 3:15 is the shortest among active UFC light heavyweights and the sixth shortest in the division’s history.
Perosh’s 3.7 submission attempts per 15 minutes of fighting are the most by any fighter in UFC light heavyweight history.
Perosh’s 14-second knockout of Vinny Magalhaes at UFC 163 was the third fastest in UFC light heavyweight history (Ryan Jimmo def. Perosh, UFC 149, 0:07; James Irvin def. Houston Alexander, UFC Fight Night 13, 0:08).
Perosh has earned all 14 of his career victories by knockout or submission.
Opponents Barry and Soa Palelei (19-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) have only fought to a decision once in a combined 36 professional fights.
Barry has been defeated by knockout or submission in all six of his career losses.
Barry’s average fight time of 6:05 is the sixth shortest in UFC heavyweight history.
Barry and/or his opponent have received a post-fight bonus in eight of his past nine UFC fights.
Barry has fought 11 times under the UFC banner without winning back-to-back fights. Only Wanderlei Silva (12 UFC fights) has entered the octagon more times without consecutive victories.
Barry’s eight knockdowns landed are tied with Arlovski for the third most in heavyweight history behind Cain Velasquez (nine) and Junior dos Santos (11).
Barry lands 88.2 percent of his significant strikes while at distance, the largest proportion in UFC heavyweight history.
Barry’s 78 leg kicks landed are the second most in UFC heavyweight history behind Arlovski (100). He lands 42.8 percent of his significant strikes to his opponents’ legs, the third largest proportion in UFC history.
Barry is one of six fighters in UFC history to earn a finish stemming from leg kicks.
Barry’s 52.2 percent significant strike accuracy ranks third in UFC heavyweight history.
Barry’s 80 percent takedown defense rate ranks third in UFC heavyweight history (min. 20 opponent attempts).
“The Ultimate Fighter 17″ Team Jones teammates Dylan Andrews (17-4 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Clint Hester (8-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meet on the main card.
Andrews’ current six-fight MMA winning streak is tied for the longest of his career.
Hester is one of nine fighters in UFC history to earn a knockout victory stemming from a standing elbow strike.
Takeya Mizugaki‘s (18-7-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) current three-fight winning streak is the longest of his UFC/WEC career, which dates back to 2009. His seven career UFC/WEC bantamweight victories are tied for the fifth most in divisional history.
Mizugaki’s average fight time of 14:32 is the third longest in UFC/WEC bantamweight history. His 2:54:20 of total fight time in UFC/WEC bantamweight competition is the second most in the division’s history.
Mizugaki’s 508 significant strikes landed in UFC/WEC bantamweight competition are the third most in the division’s history. His 937 total strikes are also the second most in bantamweight history.
Mizugaki’s 20 takedowns in UFC/WEC bantamweight competition are the fifth most in the division’s history. His 74.1 percent takedown accuracy is the highest in UFC/WEC bantamweight history.
Nam Phan (18-11 MMA, 2-4 UFC) has been defeated by decision in eight of his 11 career losses. Phan has not been finished under the UFC banner.
Phan was on the losing end of just the second 30-24 scorecard in UFC history in his UFC on FOX 5 loss to Dennis Siver. The first was Nate Quarry vs. Kalib Starnes at UFC 83.
Phan has absorbed the most and second-most total strikes in UFC/WEC featherweight history, absorbing 222 total strikes against Siver at UFC on FOX 5 and 221 total strikes against Jimy Hettes at UFC 141.
Phan’s 174 significant strikes landed against Leonard Garcia at UFC 136 are the most ever landed in a UFC/WEC featherweight fight. Phan is the only featherweight in UFC/WEC history to top the 100-significant-strikes-landed mark three times.
Julie Kedzie (16-12 MMA, 0-1 UFC) enters the event on a career-worst three-fight losing streak.
Kedzie’s 28 professional fights are the most of any female currently signed to the UFC roster.
Bethe Correia (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has earned five of her six career victories by decision.
PRELIMINARY CARD
Nick Ring (13-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) owns no UFC victories over fighters who are still part of the organization’s middleweight roster.
Ring’s average fight time of 14:43 is the second longest in UFC middleweight history.
Ring’s 3.8 strikes landed per minute rate is the sixth highest in UFC middleweight history.
Bruno Santos (13-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has earned 11 of his 13 career victories by decision. He hasn’t finished an opponent since September 2008.
Alex Garcia (10-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has earned nine of his 10 career victories by knockout or submission, eight in the first round.

Remember the “Rally for Mark Hunt?” The online groundswell of support for the Super Samoan— kickboxing legend turned resurgent MMA star—to get a shot at Junior Dos Santos when Alistair Overeem was popped for high testosterone in 2012?
Those were the days.
Hunt was on a three-fight winning streak and had been absolutely smashing guys against all odds, getting grossly better in his UFC career as he got closer to 40 years old. The promotion decided not to give Hunt the short-notice shot that night, opting for Frank Mir instead.
Well, he got his chance a year later.
The circumstances were different, but the fight with Dos Santos still happened. The Brazilian no longer had the title, but another Overeem withdrawal put Hunt in there with the division’s best boxer.
Fans got everything they wanted and more, with Hunt absorbing tremendous punishment before Dos Santos finished him with a shocking spinning kick. The bout was a war, winning Fight of the Night, but Hunt fell to 9-8 overall and was suddenly much less of a talking point.
Fast forward six months, and Hunt is headlining UFC Fight Night 33 this weekend against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. He’s still a resurgent 39-year-old, 4-1 in his past five fights, but there is much less hoopla this time out.
He’s got quality tools at his disposal and seems committed to improving those that require improvement. He’s as tough as anyone in the sport, has a lifetime of elite striking behind him and has gradually learned a little submission defense along the way. He can get up when you take him down, and he knows what to do once he’s back upright.

Bloody Elbow will be providing live video and updates when all 22 fighters on the card step on the scale at today’s UFC Fight Night 33 weigh-ins live from Brisbane, Australia. You can catch a live stream of the weigh-ins above, or if that doesn’t work for some reason, you can view it over at MMA Fighting. The weigh-ins begin at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
The main event of UFC Fight Night 33 is a heavyweight showdown between Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva.
Mark Hunt has zeroed in on another big fish in the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight division.
The 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner tipped the scales at 262 pounds for his battle with Antonio Silva (264) in the UFC Fight Night 33 main event on Friday at the Brisbane Entertainment Center in Brisbane, Australia. Light heavyweight co-headliners Mauricio Rua (205) and James Te Huna (205) also met their contracted weight requirements without incident at Thursday’s official weigh-in.
Hunt last appeared at UFC 160 in May, when his four-fight winning streak was rudely interrupted by a spinning hook kick from Junior dos Santos at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The 39-year-old kiwi has compiled a 4-2 mark since arriving in the UFC in September 2010, his unexpected resurgence supplying the MMA world with one of its most improbable storylines. Hunt remains the only man to defeat both 2006 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix winner Mirko Filipovic and former Pride 205-pound titleholder Wanderlei Silva.
“Bigfoot,” meanwhile, has not competed since he fell short in his bid to unseat heavyweight boss Cain Velasquez at UFC 160. Still regarded as one of the world’s top 5 heavyweights, the 34-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has secured 16 of his 18 career wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Victories over onetime Strikeforce titleholder Alistair Overeem, Russian legend Fedor Emelianenko and fast-rising Hawaiian Travis Browne anchor the Silva resume, which also includes wins against two former UFC champions: Andrei Arlovski and Ricco Rodriguez.
UFC Fight Night 33 “Hunt vs. Bigfoot” — which airs live on Fox Sports 1 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT — will also feature a light heavyweight scrap pairing “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 winner Ryan Bader (205) with Anthony Perosh (205), a heavyweight duel pitting Pat Barry (237) against Soa Palelei (264), a middleweight clash matching Dylan Andrews (185) with Clint Hester (186) and a women’s bantamweight tilt between Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts representative Julie Kedzie (135) and the undefeated Bethe Correia (135).
Two hours prior, Fox Sports 2 will also carry four preliminary bouts: Takeya Mizugaki (135) vs. Nam Phan (135), Nick Ring (185) vs. Caio Magalhaes (186), Richie Vaculik (126) vs. Justin Scoggins (125) and Bruno Santos (185) vs. Krzysztof Jotko (185). The remaining undercard matchup will stream to the UFC’s Facebook page at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, as “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes” alum Ben Wall (168) meets Alex Garcia (170).
The Ultimate Fighting Championship will travel Down Under for the first time in nearly a year on Friday, when the Las Vegas-based organization holds UFC Fight Night 33 from the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia.
The main card airs live on Fox Sports 1 and is headlined by a heavyweight showdown between Antonio Silva and Mark Hunt. Immediately prior, former light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua will do battle with James Te Huna in the co-main event slot.
Preceding the main card broadcast, the preliminary draw airs live on Fox Sports 1 and Facebook. Here are five reasons to tune in for the undercard:
Sherdog Fantasy MMA: UFC Fight Night 33 Free Fan Pick’Em
‘Fireball’ on the Hot Seat
Julie Kedzie could use a victory right about now.
“Fireball” rides a three-fight skid into her clash with Bethe Correia, who recently replaced another undefeated prospect in Aleksandra Albu after the Russian bantamweight withdrew due to injury.
Kedzie joined the UFC earlier this year after going winless in her two-fight Strikeforce run. However, the Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts product nearly ended that stint in glory by taking Miesha Tate to the limit before submitting to a third-round armbar. The veteran then put forth a valiant effort against Thai boxing ace Germaine de Randamie in her UFC debut in July; however, Kedzie ultimately came up short when her top control, as compared to the Dutchwoman’s superior clinch work, proved insufficient to sway two of the three judges.
While it is by no means guaranteed that Kedzie will receive a pink slip in the event of a loss, I do not think it is out of the question when considering the ever-expanding nature of the women’s bantamweight division. Can Kedzie avoid her fourth consecutive setback when she meets Correira?
Caio’s Comeback
After an underwhelming Octagon debut, Caio Magalhaes looked like a man to be reckoned with in his sophomore promotional appearance. Based on his performance against Buddy Roberts, it appeared unlikely that such a stout effort would be put forth in his next bout, but that is exactly what transpired.
Roberts out-struck the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and stifled his increasingly desperate takedown attempts as he began to fatigue, handing Magalhaes his first defeat via unanimous decision last year at UFC on FX 3. One year later, Magalhaes returned to the cage against Karlos Vemola, weathering an early storm from the Czech powerhouse before submitting him with a second-round rear-naked choke. The Brazilian clearly learned a lesson about conditioning against Roberts and put it to good use in his second outing.
Can Magalhaes now add another victory to his record at the expense of Canadian talent Nick Ring or will “The Promise” send him packing?
Mizugaki Moving Up
Photo: Taro Irei/Sherdog.com
Mizugaki has won three in a row.
Nobody wants to be known as an also-ran, but I think Takeya Mizugaki was on that undesirable path up until recently.
While his fights never lacked excitement, Mizugaki did lack consistency dating back to his failed World Extreme Cagefighting title bid against Miguel Torres. After the Japanese import alternated wins and losses over the course of nine fights, his job security appeared tenuous, to say the least.
That all changed about a year ago, when Mizugaki kicked off a three-fight winning streak with a unanimous decision win over Jeff Hougland. Hard-fought split decision triumphs over Bryan Caraway and Erik Perez would follow, and Mizugaki’s outpouring of emotion following both victories — particularly after the Caraway win — were hard to ignore.
Such a genuine display of pure joy and relief is far less common than post-fight posturing or a shout-out to The God Who Inexplicably Cares About Pro Sports, and I think that makes Mizugaki an easy guy to root for at 135 pounds.
Another veteran in Nam Phan now blocks Mizugaki’s path. Can the Japanese standout score his fourth straight win or will Phan sidestep back-to-back defeats by halting Mizugaki’s momentum?
Fly Prospects
Justin Scoggins and Richie Vaculik are two new additions to the UFC’s burgeoning flyweight roster, and you should watch them.
Vaculik introduced himself to UFC fans during “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes,” competing way above his natural weight at 155 pounds and losing to eventual winner Norman Parke in the quarterfinals. Prior to that exhibition defeat, “Vas” had won five straight fights and nine of his first 10. The 30-year-old has also stopped all nine of his career victims, submitting six of them. Scoggins, meanwhile, has never lost as a professional and owns five of his seven victories by way of knockout. I do not want to speak out of turn, but that sounds like some John Dodson-type power.
Which of these men will make a statement during their first appearance in the UFC’s lightest division?
On the Rise
The prelims will feature four fighters with one loss between them in 45 combined outings. I have certainly heard of worse ways to kick off a UFC card.
At middleweight, unbeaten Polish prospect Krzysztof Jotko will battle ex-Bellator MMA talent Bruno Santos. While this one does not figure to be a barnburner considering their finishing rates, it will nevertheless serve as a solid indicator to see which of these men, if either, is ready to compete under the bright lights of the UFC.
Just prior, Canadian finisher Alex Garcia will lock horns with undefeated Aussie Ben Wall. Like Vaculik, Wall enters the Octagon coming off a stint on “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes” that saw him eliminated in the Round of 8. Meanwhile, Garcia makes his UFC debut riding a four-fight winning streak. “The Dominican Nightmare” has lost just once in 11 pro outings and has scored nine of his victories inside the distance.
Will any of these Octagon rookies set a fire in their promotional debuts? Get in on the ground floor and watch them to find out.

Tim Burke: Is Bigfoot more well-rounded? Yup. Is he going to get clubbered in the face and knocked out? I hope so. Mark Hunt by KO, round 1
Fraser Coffeen: Look, I don’t like making this pick. The K-1 fan in me demands that I love Mark Hunt, and even without that, Hunt is one of my personal favorites. I picked him to beat Rothwell, and Kongo, and Struve. But he’s now 39 and he was just absolutely wrecked last time out. That run to near title contention was great and inspiring, but that run is over, and I’m afraid we’re not going to see that out of Hunt again. I would love to be wrong though. War Super Samoan! Bigfoot Silva by TKO round 2
Mookie Alexander: Bigfoot can totally win this fight. On paper he’s definitely the better fighter and is capable of taking Hunt down and playing the bongos on his face and forcing the TKO like he did vs. Fedor. Buuuuuut his chin cannot hold up against Hunt’s power, so PRIDE NEVER DIE and all that jazz … I’m picking Hunt because of the sinking feeling that Silva is going to stand with Hunt way too long. Mark Hunt by KO, round 1.
Zane Simon: Bigfoot has to be one of the least trustworthy picks in the heavyweight division. He has the ability to get demolished by any striker with really good power (read almost every heavyweight) but he has this nasty mix of martial arts skills, due to his heavy background in BJJ, Judo, and Karate, that can surprise even the very best fighters. Hunt, on the other hand, is very known, stand with him and your standup had better be amazing, grapple with him and he’s just barely able to stay alive. I honestly think that Bigfoot is going to mess around just little too much in this fight, but I wouldn’t be even a little surprised to see him take Hunt the way he did Fedor. Mark Hunt by KO, Round 1.
Connor Ruebusch: Poor takedowns and a suspect chin are a bad mix against the Super Samoan. Easy pick for me. Hunt by KO, round 1.
Staff picking Hunt: Stephie, Mookie, Zane, Tim, Connor, Dallas
Staff picking Bigfoot:Grant, Fraser
Mauricio Rua vs. James Te Huna
Tim Burke: Shogun is NOT finished. Not by a longshot. Getting subbed by Sonnen definitely hurt his rep, but this is a perfect fight for him. JTH has decent wrestling but he won’t be able to keep Shogun down. And on the feet, Shogun’s still way faster. Te Huna hits like a truck, but Shogun hasn’t shown any signs of a deteriorating chin. I love this fight and it’s going to be a war. But Shogun is going to knock him out. Y’all are crazy. Shogua Rua by KO, round 2
Mookie Alexander: Shogun is finished. Finito. His last great performance was when he ended Joe Rogan’s famed “Machida Era” … in 2010. He’s taken an enormous amount of punishment recently, and Chael Sonnen’s total domination of him (and submission!) is telling of how far he’s dropped off. His gas tank isn’t getting any better, his granite chin is still great but has clearly eroded some, and unless he can work Te Huna on the ground — where it’s clear that James has a deficiency — I think Te Huna’s wickedly powerful combinations and brutal uppercuts will be too much for this version of Shogun to handle. James Te Huna by TKO, round 2.
Fraser Coffeen: Wait, I have to pick against Hunt AND Shogun? Screw this card. James Te Huna by decision
Zane Simon: Alright, I took the heart pick with Hunt, but I gotta go with my head here and pick against Shogun. Much like the arrival of the rifle in Japan, time has been hard on the Shogunate. He’s actually younger than Te Huna here, which is just ridiculous, because he might as well be 1000 in fight years. His chin probably isn’t gone, I don’t know that he’ll ever get chinny, but everything else seems to have flown out the window. Despite the prodigious power, James Te Huna by Unanimous Decision.
Connor Ruebusch: I came in here fully expecting to pick against Shogun, but I’m suddenly wary. Te Huna has decent boxing, but Shogun has shown a recent willingness to take tough opponents down, and he has a much better ground game than his opponent this time out. Also, he didn’t get the chance against Sonnen, but I think it’s likely that the training under Freddie Roach has made some improvements to Shogun’s boxing game. Roach tends to make guys into intelligently offensive machines, and with Shogun’s power that’s a scary thought. I’m not sure why, but I’m going with the old guard here. Shogun by TKO, round 2.
Staff picking Shogun: Tim, Connor, Dallas
Staff picking JTH: Stephie, Mookie, Grant, Fraser, Zane
Ryan Bader vs. Anthony Perosh
Tim Burke: The fact that they made this fight at all is so weird. Ryan Bader by TKO, round 1.
Mookie Alexander: Well this isn’t going to be competitive unless Bader wants to make it two losses to guys aged 68 years old and not known for their striking. Ryan Bader by KO, round 1.
Zane Simon: If Anthony Perosh KO’s Ryan Bader I’ll be laughing like a maniacal fool. That would make two straight KO’s for the 41 year old Hippo, and another KO loss for Bader’s record. Honestly though, I don’t see it happening. Bader has everything he needs to launch huge bombs from the outside, and outside the range of Perosh’s mechanical one-twos. He also has the wrestling to stay upright. Ryan Bader by TKO, Round 1.
Connor Ruebusch: I’m tempted to pick Perosh here, but Bader’s not a bad fighter against this level of competition. He was able to hurt Glover Teixeira before getting caught pursuing the finish, and Perosh isn’t exactly hard to hit. Bader by TKO, round 1.
Staff picking Bader: Stephie, Mookie, Grant, Fraser, Zane, Tim, Connor, Dallas
Staff picking Perosh:
Pat Barry vs. Soa Palelei
Tim Burke: Palelei doesn’t have the hand speed to stand and trade with Barry. He could take him down and go for the sub, but I doubt it. I think he’s going to get kicked in the legs a whole bunch, then punched in the face and he’ll wake up a couple of minutes later in confusion. Pat Barry by KO, round 1
Mookie Alexander: I think I’ve got Pat Barry figured out. He’s never won two UFC fights in a row but normally he rebounds from losses by punching people in the head in ridiculously violent fashion. Palelei gets to play the role of the guy who Pat Barry knocks out. Pat Barry by KO, round 1.
Zane Simon: Ugh, this is either going to be awesome for one round or terrible for two, I’m not sure which. And I’m doubly unsure of who wins. Honestly Palelei has everything he needs to sleep Barry, and likewise Barry has everything he needs. Barry has a few more technical tools, but not so many that I ever feel comfortable picking him, especially after that Shawn Jordan disaster. For the sake of interest I’m taking Palelei here, but that’s more to gin up the fight than anything else. Soa Palelei by KO, Round 1.
Connor Ruebusch: Pat Barry is just the coolest dude, but he’s so unbelievably inconsistent. This one is essentially a toss-up to me, because Pat has a knack for getting hit in the face and/or outworked on the ground, whereas Palelei has only shown us so far that he’s capable of gassing tremendously on the big stage. Ugh… I dunno. Palelei by Submission, round 2.
Staff picking Barry: Stephie, Grant, Fraser, Mookie, Tim, Dallas
Staff picking Palelei: Zane, Connor
Dylan Andrews vs. Clint Hester
Tim Burke: This should be a decent fight. Dylan Andrews by decision.
Fraser Coffeen: Two decent if not exactly spectacular TUF prospects here, but both have shown something in the UFC. This is actually the rare good fight from non-TUF finalists. Go figure! Andrews is more well rounded, but Hester has the striking edge, and that should be enough. Clint Hester by decision
Mookie Alexander: Andrews was likely on his way to a loss vs. Papy Abedi before pulling off the late 3rd round KO. That seems to be his game in a nutshell. He’s tough, has good power in his hands, but he’s in his 30s and is past the stage of “prospect”. I think Hester projects to be a better fighter in the long term and probably already is better than Andrews right now. Clint Hester by decision.
Zane Simon: If Andrews were 7 years younger he’d have a ton of potential. As it is, he’s a decent, power punching brawler, basically diet Te Huna. Hester definitely feels like he has more upside to really develop and show a lot of skill progression in his UFC career. All things being static I might take Andrews here, but I’m hoping/expecting that Hester brings some more polish to this fight. Clint Hester by TKO, Round 2.
Connor Ruebusch: Hester is somewhat one-dimensional, but Andrews didn’t show any dimensions at all until the third round against Papy Abedi. I’ve gotta go with the boxer with the sharp elbows. Hester by KO, round 3.
Staff picking Andrews: Tim, Dallas
Staff picking Hester: Stephie, Grant, Fraser, Mookie, Zane, Conor
Bethe Correia vs. Julie Kedzie
Tim Burke: Meh. This is one of the problems with shallow divisions. Neither are really “UFC caliber” but the lack of depth apparently says they are. Bethe Correia by decision
Zane Simon: Right now, Julie Kedzie needs this fight. Correia is exceptionally untested and unpolished as a prospect. She’s strong and patient, but she’s not a terribly technical striker and while she’s controlling on the ground, no part of her game feels like a finished product. Kedzie has everything she needs to clinch, grind, and box her way to a decision, and if she can’t then it may be time to take a long hard look at broadcasting. Julie Kedzie by Decision.
Staff picking Correia: Fraser, Tim
Staff picking Kedzie: Stephie, Grant, Zane, Mookie, Connor, Dallas
Takeya Mizugaki vs. Nam Phan
Tim Burke: Phan just hasn’t really looked good at all in the UFC. The new weight class might help, but Mizugaki is a beast and he’s going to get soundly outgrappled. Takeya Mizugaki by decision.
Mookie Alexander: Nam Phan’s last two losses were some of the most savage beatings I’ve ever seen. He’s been on the wrong end of 3 combined 30-25s and the 30-24 against Dennis Siver. Mizugaki is finally on a good run and he’s going to stomp him. Takeya Mizugaki by lopsided decision.
Fraser Coffeen: Mizugaki is an excellent gatekeeper who does his job well. You have to be a level above to get a win over him, and Nam Phan is not that level. Takeya Mizugaki by decision
Zane Simon: Mizugaki is such an even keeled, consistent, top level fighter, and Nam Phan just isn’t. It’s a shame, because Phan’s a lot of fun when he’s “on,” but he’d need a career performance to beat Mizugaki who just does everything better and does it all the time. Takeya Mizugaki by Decision.
Connor Ruebusch: Seems like either the people making his fights or Takeya Mizugaki himself has finally figured out that the way to stop alternating wins and losses is to stop only fighting top-flight competition. Mizugaki is a very solid gatekeeper, and he positively outclassed a dangerous if limited fighter in Erik Perez in his last showing. Phan, on the other hand, is a cool guy with an exciting style that just doesn’t seem to be working for him anymore. Mizugaki by Unanimous Decision.
Staff picking Mizugaki: Stephie, Grant, Fraser, Zane, Mookie, Tim, Connor, Dallas
Staff picking Phan:
Caio Magalhaes vs. Nick Ring
Tim Burke: Canada I guess. Ring’s the better fighter anyway. Nick Ring by TKO, round 1
Zane Simon: Magalhaes is definitely strong and has some grappling/wrestling ability. But he’s hardly a complete fighter. I think this will be close, because Nick Ring fights are always close, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Magalhaes can pull him down and totally outclass him. But I think Ring boxes him from the outside and grinds away against the fence for three boring rounds of bad standup action. Nick Ring by Decision.
Connor Ruebusch: Is it even possible for Nick Ring to lose a decision? Ring by Unanimous Decision.
Staff picking Magalhaes: Grant,
Staff picking Ring: Stephie, Fraser, Mookie, Zane, Tim, Connor, Dallas
Justin Scoggins vs. Richie Vaculik
Tim Burke: Scoggins seems like a pretty good prospect and I think he’s going to tear right through Vaculik here. Justin Scoggins by TKO, round 1
Zane Simon: This is a great fight for Scoggins, whose striking is lightyears ahead of Vaculik. That’s not to say that he’s going to conquer flyweight, but much like Stephen Thompson, he should be able to put a hurting on the low end of the division. Vaculik is not bad, but he does absolutely nothing particularly well. Justin Scoggins via KO, Round 2.
Staff picking Scoggins: Fraser, Mookie, Zane, Tim, Connor
Staff picking Vaculik: Stephie, Grant, Dallas
Krzysztof Jotko vs. Bruno Santos
Tim Burke: All Bruno, all day. He’s fought a gaggle of five rounders and has beaten some pretty decent guys. Bruno Santos by decision
Zane Simon: This should be a pretty one sided fight too. Jotko may be undefeated on the European regional scene, but he’s an incredibly raw prospect who wins fights with toughness and a mix of developing skills. His striking is awkward and his ground game is nothing to write home about. On the other hand, Santos is a hulking grind blanket of fun sucking power. He takes this easily. Bruno Santos via Unanimous Decision.
Staff picking Jotko: Stephie, Mookie
Staff picking Santos: Grant, Fraser, Zane, Tim, Connor, Dallas
Alex Garcia vs. Ben Wall
Tim Burke: Alex Garcia is a name you’re going to be hearing a lot about. I don’t think you’ll have to worry about the “conservative Tri-Star gameplan” that some fans like to bitch about. He’s a well-rounded savage and in my eyes, it’s just a matter of how he wins. I’ll go with a knockout. Alex Garcia by TKO, round 2.
Fraser Coffeen: When in doubt, pick the guy from Tristar. Alex Garcia by decision
Zane Simon: The bottom end of this card isn’t even close in terms of matchups. Ben Wall was a mediocre prospect on TUF Smashes, and has displayed little in the way of finishing ability over his career. Across from him is a beast in Alex Garcia who has been tearing through opponents north of the border. Garcia is going to maul the Manimal. Alex Garcia via Submission, Round 2.
Staff picking Garcia: Fraser, Mookie, Zane, Tim, Connor, Dallas
Staff picking Wall: Stephie, Grant

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre (BEC) is located in Boondall, a Brisbane City suburb, in Queensland, Australia. It is managed by AEG Ogden.
The arena has an array of seating plans which facilitate the comfort of its users, subject to performance. Specific seating plans are usually allocated, depending on the performance and the size of its audience. The general seating arrangements are end stage mode, “in the round” and intimate mode, which only uses half of the arena. The centre also houses a sporting complex and small function rooms which are available to hire for wedding reception and business functions.
The centre has 11,000 tiered seats and a maximum concert capacity of 14,500 making it the largest indoor live entertainment arena in Brisbane.[1] It cost $71 million to construct.[2]
The centre’s large audience capacity is mostly used for the staging of concerts and musical theatre shows, including Pink’s The Truth About Love Tour, Grease, Beauty and the Beast, and The Man from Snowy River: Arena Spectacular. It has also staged ice-skating shows, including Disney on Ice. The Entertainment Centre was also the filming venue for the original Australian series of Gladiators from 1995 to 1997.
Location
Located in Boondall, just off the Gateway Motorway, patrons can catch a QR Citytrain to Boondall railway station, on the Shorncliffe railway line, or travel by taxi. There are 4,000 car parking spaces. Buses do not run to the centre even on event nights.
Bigfoot VS Hunt live stream UFC
There are a million variables that go into attempting to pick the correct outcome of a prizefight, but you really can’t argue with cold, hard facts, and UFC heavyweight contender Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva has one for you leading up to his UFC Fight Night main event against knockout artist Mark Hunt tomorrow night.
“Since I started my career I never lost to a striker,” said Silva. “But statistics and numbers don’t matter to me. I just believe in my training and myself.”
It is an interesting number though, because none of the five defeats the Brazilian has suffered over the course of his 23 fight career have come against someone you would classify as a pure striker. And on the flip side, several of his victims – Alistair Overeem, Travis Browne, Mike Kyle, Andrei Arlovski, Cabbage Correira – would fit that description of having a striking-based style. That kind of success could make a fighter not just confident, but overconfident, but Silva appears to have found the right mix of confidence and respect for his opponent.
“He is an excellent striker with a lot of experience,” said Silva of Hunt. “He deserves respect, but I am ready and I have confidence in myself.”
Silva and Hunt are no strangers to each other either, as the two had trained together in the past at the American Top Team gym in south Florida. Neither fighter is willing to put too much, if any, stock in those training sessions, choosing instead to focus on the task at hand and where they stand today in the heavyweight division. For Hunt, the fight is an opportunity to get back on the winning track after a Fight of the Night loss to Junior Dos Santos in May. On that same UFC 160 card, Silva lost a rematch to Cain Velasquez in a heavyweight title bout. It’s a defeat that still stings Bigfoot.
“In my eyes, (referee Mario) Yamasaki stopped the fight too early,” he said. “I was conscious and he stopped the fight.”
It’s the fighter’s mentality in vivid view. If you want to beat me, knock me out. And that’s not just talk from the 34-year-old Brasilia native, as he hasn’t been to a judges’ decision since his May 2010 win over Arlovski. That’s seven straight fights where, win or lose, someone got finished. It’s precisely why, despite his loss to Velasquez, Silva is back in a main event this week.
“The UFC knows I fight hard and I go there to finish my fights by knocking people out or submitting them,” he said. “I don’t want to win my fights by decision.”
And even though this one is scheduled for five rounds, the odds of it going 25 full minutes are probably slim and none.
“I am ready to fight five rounds on the feet,” he said. “But you can’t always predict a fight. I will try to knock him out but don’t be surprised if you see a submission.”
At this point in Silva’s career, the only surprising thing would be if he and Hunt hear a judges’ decision at the end of the night. So for now, Bigfoot firmly believes that this fight is the start of a 2014 campaign that will put him back in line for another shot at championship gold, and he can’t wait.
“Mark Hunt is a tremendous athlete, and by beating him I will close the year very well,” said Silva. “2013 was a great year and I learned a lot with my fights, and in 2014 I will train hard and reach my goal to be a UFC heavyweight world champion.”
Mark Hunt, who fights Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva this Friday night (Saturday in Australia) in the main event of UFC Fight Night, was expecting a holiday after his loss to Junior Dos Santos. Instead, he was struck down with a nasty leg infection, spending several weeks in and out of the hospital. If you were following the “Super Samoan” on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll know just how bad it was, as he shared photos and videos of the gaping hole in his leg. If you’re curious, those images are still floating around the internet, but they aren’t for the squeamish.
Hunt says the gruesome infection is behind him though and he is back in top condition.
“It’s (recovery) been long but training’s really good now, I’m in good shape, and I’m looking forward to the fight. Recovery’s been good, training’s been really hard and I’m just looking forward to getting to work.”
Changing Gears
Hunt was valiant in defeat against Dos Santos in May at UFC 160. Despite being dropped in round one by a huge right hand from “Cigano,” Hunt still looked dangerous early, putting together some good combinations. However, former champion JDS began to dominate as the fight wore on, eventually finishing Hunt with a spinning hook kick in the last minute of the third round.
After the fight, Hunt revealed that he suffered a broken toe in the first round. However, he downplays the role that had in the fight’s outcome. > Watch: Mark Hunt – The Art of Fighting
“I lost the fight because I lost the fight. It felt like he changed gears in the second round and I couldn’t keep up. I just couldn’t change gears with him. So I was still in first gear and I sat in first gear trying to catch up, trying to play catch up footy but I just couldn’t do it so I fell behind and got chopped up.”
Perennial underdog Hunt is once again facing one of the heavyweight division’s top fighters in #4 ranked “Bigfoot” Silva. It’s not a fight Hunt particularly wanted as both Hunt and Silva are members of Florida-based fight camp American Top Team (though Hunt has opted to prepare in New Zealand for his last few fights). Nevertheless, he’s grateful for the opportunity.
“We’re not close friends but he’s still one of the American Top Team guys. It’s a fight I didn’t want but that’s not my job to make calls on who I’m fighting. It’s a pretty good opportunity for myself. I’m thankful to have this opportunity, Bigfoot’s number four in the world so people are always going to say it’s a step down for him to fight me, but I feel great to have this opportunity.”
Top Teammates
Former K-1 kickboxing World Grand Prix Champion Hunt holds Silva in high esteem.
“We worked together but there was no animosity; he’s a respectful guy and so am I, so I have a lot of respect for Antonio, he just does his work and so do I.”
Both men are powerful strikers, though on paper Bigfoot has the superior ground game. In response, the New Zealand-born Sydneysider Hunt is working all aspects of fighting in preparation for his Brazilian opponent.
“Just the same thing, working on the ground defenses, ground skills, wrestling, striking – just working on the whole lot.”
While the two have sparred together, Hunt will not be relying on anything learned in those sessions.
“I’m not gonna bank on that; it’s a fight and anyone can win the fight, that’s the way I look at it. It’s one of those things, who would’ve thought JDS would’ve done a spinning hook kick to fix me up (laughs). You can’t work a game plan for something that might not even work like that.”
Forever a Fighter
Hunt’s career turnaround has been inspirational. After lengthy periods of inactivity and failing to win a fight in almost five years, the Super Samoan strung together four wins and has re-established himself as a dangerous contender.
Fighting can be an unforgiving sport though. Hunt recently encountered one of his heroes: heavyweight boxer David Tua, a fellow Samoan from New Zealand. Tua, an elite boxer with a turbulent career, recently tried a comeback of his own. Hunt empathizes with Tua because he knows all too well what it’s like to be burned by the fight game. > Watch: Rhythm of Hunt
“David Tua’s one of the pioneers of fighting; we all looked to David Tua as one of the pioneers for the Samoan community here in New Zealand. He’s had a lot of things happen to him like I did, being cheated by management and everything, and it’s a hard thing to watch someone (go through that) as a fighter, knowing what goes on. For him to go through that, where he’s been, because you’ve been there already.”
David Tua’s comeback effort, though brave, was not as successful as Hunt’s. After a decision loss to Alexander Ustinov on November 16, Tua announced his retirement. At 39 years old, Hunt finds retirement hard to imagine.
“Well I don’t know (when I will retire); it’s hard for a fighter to give up fighting, I’ve spent my whole life fighting, I love fighting. For me to give it up, it’s gonna be hard for me to walk away and say I can’t do it anymore. But when God says it’s time for me to move on, that’s when I’ll move on. It could be the next fight, who knows.” Hunt is a fighter to his core, and as he once put it, fighters aren’t normal.
“I’m not a 9-5 person, I don’t want to go get a job (laughs). I just don’t think I’m a normal person to be doing all this. To put yourself through so much stress mentally, physically, it’s like a drug for me, and when you come down from the whole scenario (it’s hard).”
Whatever comes next, however, Hunt’s focus right now is on beating Bigfoot.
In the fight game, you take any advantage you can get: physical, psychological, whatever it takes. Sydney’s Richie Vaculik basically went in the other direction when trying out for the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes series in 2012, giving up any advantage he had to get a shot at a UFC contract by signing up as a lightweight competitor on the reality series.
Vaculik is a career-long bantamweight.
“It was too good of an opportunity not to take on,” he explains. “It’s always been a dream of mine to compete in the UFC, and I didn’t want to leave any stone unturned, so I applied for it, selected lightweight, went through the audition process, and got lucky and was chosen.”
Only a real fighter will call himself lucky while knowing that he had six weeks of training and fighting with monsters ahead of him, separated from family, friends, and the outside world as part of the deal. And as his custom, Vaculik tried to look at the bright side.
“I was one of the lucky ones that didn’t have to cut weight in the house, which was a bit of a bonus,” he laughs. “But then of course when you step into the cage and the guy has 15 to 25 pounds on you, it’s a little tough. But that’s no excuse because I still think I could have beat both my opponents; I just made a few mistakes and they capitalized.”
Representing his native Australia against Team UK, Vaculik lost his first bout in the competition to eventual winner Norman Parke. An injury to Team UK’s Mike Wilkinson brought him back to the semifinals, but his second stab at glory came up short when he was submitted by Colin Fletcher.
“It was extremely tough,” said Vaculik of the TUF experience. “I didn’t realize how tough it would be, being away from my loved ones and my family and living in a house with your opponents and having no escape. All you saw was the gym and the house for six weeks. I love to surf and spend time on the beach. It’s a great escape from fighting and a great way to come back to the gym refreshed and excited about fighting, and that was all taken away from me. So it was a massive learning experience as a fighter and as a person and something I was really grateful for. I’m very proud to have been there and done it, and I feel like I left the place a better person for it. I knew it was a gamble going in there as a lightweight and giving that weight away, but I still believe I could have won it. I was a little disappointed in my performances.”
Vaculik, 9-1 entering the house, did impress with his heart and tenacity, but once the show was over, a UFC contract wasn’t on his doorstep.
“After I left I was hoping to get signed back down at my weight by the UFC, but the roster was so stacked at that moment that it was just best to go out and get some fights at bantamweight or flyweight and try to stick with it,” said Vaculik, who stayed busy in a bit of an unconventional manner, fighting at home for the Combat 8 promotion that uses modified rules of three minute rounds and only 30 seconds of groundfighting allowed per round. Vaculik won the organization’s championship at bantamweight, competed in jiu-jitsu tournaments, took part in another reality series, The Crew, and even though he was fielding offers from other MMA promotions, he still had his heart set on getting a call from the UFC.
“I’ve tried to stay busy and I did that, fighting in a promotion that had modified rules,” he said. “I won the bantamweight title in that promotion and then I was in talks with promotions throughout Asia, and I just wanted to stay active. That was the main thing, but it was getting quite hard to stay active here in Australia. A few promotions went under. But then I got a call from the UFC so I was over the moon.”
So what is it about those three letters – UFC – that meant so much to the 30-year-old Vaculik?
“It’s the biggest and best promotion of mixed martial arts in the world,” he said. “If you’re a serious MMA fighter and you want to prove yourself and test yourself with the world’s best, the UFC is the only place to do it. They’re head and shoulders above any other promotion. I had a taste of it being in the Smashes, and I did wonder what it would be like to fight in the UFC, so I never lost sight of it.”
On Friday (Saturday in Australia), Vaculik gets his shot at 125 pounds against fellow newcomer Justin Scoggins.
“He’s a really exciting fighter,” said Vaculik. “He’s a very creative striker, he loves to move and he’s pretty evasive. He brings a whole different bunch of skills that are unique in mixed martial arts, and I’ve been working with particular guys to replicate what he’s really good at. I’m just really excited to get in there and mix it up with someone as exciting as Justin. These are the kind of fights that I really chomp at the bit for.”
Then again, you get the idea that Vaculik would be amped up for any fight in the Octagon, especially since being in the UFC was as far-fetched a notion as an Aussie fighter could have back when he turned pro in 2006.
“In the early days when I started, the UFC was just a dream because they didn’t have my weight class and it wasn’t active in this part of the world,” he said. “Then things changed and all of a sudden they added the weight classes and they started to do shows in Oz, and the possibilities started to become reality, and that’s when that excitement just grew.”
Now it’s reached a fever pitch for “Vas,” who gets that rarest of opportunities shortly: to fulfill one dream and start another.
“It’s like a new beginning.”

António Carlos Silva
António Carlos Silva (born September 14, 1979) is a Brazilian mixed martial artist who currently competes in the Heavyweight division of the UFC. He is the former EliteXC Heavyweight Champion as well as a former Cage Rage World Heavyweight Champion and a former Cage Warriors Super Heavyweight Champion. Silva is currently ranked the #5 Heavyweight in the world by Sherdog. He has also competed for K-1 Hero’s, BodogFIGHT, Strikeforce, and World Victory Road.
Background
Silva is from Brasilia, Brazil and began karate when he was four years old and trained in the martial art for 13 years before transitioning to Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Early career
Silva made his professional debut in the United Kingdom against Georgian fighter Tengiz Tedoradze, who would become the Cage Rage British Heavyweight Champion two fights later. Silva was impressive in his debut, winning by TKO only 48 seconds into the fight. In his next bout, Silva made his Cage Warriors debut and won again via strikes after his opponent submitted.
Silva then made his Cage Rage debut and became the Cage Rage World Heavyweight Champion after defeating his opponent via TKO. Silva then returned to Cage Warriors to fight longtime veteran Ruben “Warpath” Villareal for the Cage Warriors Super Heavyweight Championship and won again via TKO, and became the Cage Warriors Super Heavyweight Champion. Silva followed this up with a knockout win over Lithuanian fighter Tadas Rimkevicius before making his Japanese debut for K-1 Hero’s. In his debut for the organization, he defeated longtime veteran Tom Erikson via TKO and then won his next fight by knockout.
This brought Silva’s record to an undefeated 7-0 with all his wins coming by TKO/KO within the first round. Silva faced Eric Pele in his first and only fight with the BodogFIGHT promotion and was handed his first career loss with a controversial TKO.

Mark Hunt
Mark Hunt (born 23 March 1974) is a New Zealander mixed martial artist and former kickboxer of Samoan descent, currently living in Sydney, Australia. Hunt competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is the winner of the 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix. Hunt was the first to beat Wanderlei Silva after his 4 year undefeated winning streak in Pride Fighting Championship.
Early career
Hunt was born in Auckland, into a large Samoan family, and was a troubled child. He had no intention to be a professional fighter until a late night altercation outside a nightclub in Auckland changed the course of his life. The brawl did not last long. Sam Marsters, one of the bouncers at the door was impressed by the young man’s knockout power and invited him to his gym to take up formal training. Later that year Hunt moved to Sydney, Australia, to train with Alex Tui. A few years later he settled in Liverpool Kickboxing Gym under Maori instructor Hape Ngaranoa.Mark Hunt continues to live in Australia with his wife Julie and their three children.
K-1 career
In the beginning of his career, Hunt was used by the promoters as a stepping stone for their up and coming fighters, taking up fights at short notice, until Tarik Solak promoted K-1 Oceania tournament in February 2000. With a record of (15-4, 3KO) Hunt entered his first K-1 tournament as a heavy underdog.
He won the K-1 Oceania title by knocking out “The Coconut Crusher” Aumitagi in quarter finals, Rony Sefo in semis and Phil Fagan in the finals. After this impressive performance he was invited to Japan for K-1 qualifications. He lost his first international fight by unanimous decision against Jérôme Le Banner.
In 2001, Hunt returned to K-1 by winning the K-1 Oceania tournament for the second consecutive year. After that he took part of K-1 World GP 2001 in Melbourne, where he beat Japanese boxer Hiromi Amada, before suffering a close unanimous decision loss to reigning champion Ernesto Hoost. However, because of his exciting fighting style Hunt was granted a wildcard spot in the repercharge tournament for the K-1 World GP 2001 Finals, when Mirko Filipović had to pull out due to injury. He was drawn against Ray Sefo, who won the bout by outpointing Hunt. After the fight however, Sefo suffered an eye injury and was not able to continue, allowing Hunt to proceed in his place. Hunt then TKO’d Adam Watt to earn his place in the K-1 World Grand Prix Finals at the Tokyo Dome.
During the matchmaking for the K-1 Finals, Hunt surprised the crowd by choosing Jérôme Le Banner, whom he had just lost in the previous year, as his quarterfinal opponent. Hunt won the rematch by knocking out Le Banner in the second round and advanced himself onto the semi-finals facing Stefan Leko. Hunt knocked down Leko two times in the first round and went on to win the fight by unanimous decision. The stage was set for the final battle against Brazilian Kyokushin karate champion Francisco Filho. In the final Hunt defeated Filho by unanimous decision to become the K-1 World Grand Prix 2001 champion.
In 2002, Hunt went to Paris to fight Le Banner again for the third time what turned out to be one of the biggest battles in K-1 history. Le Banner, fighting in front of his hometown audience, knocked down Hunt in the second round but was in turn knocked down himself a few seconds later. In the final moments of the round, Hunt was knocked down for the second time again by the powerful Frenchman. In between rounds the towel was thrown in as Hunt could not continue.
On 17 December 2002, Mark Hunt returned to defend his K-1 World Grand Prix title. In quarter finals, entering the third round and behind on all scorecards, Mark was able to connect with a right cross that knocked out Stefan Leko and advanced him to the semi-finals against his career long nemesis Jerome Le Banner. Despite knocking down the Frenchman at the end of the third round, Hunt lost the fight by decision. It would to be his last K-1 World Grand Prix appearance.
In April 2008, FEG announced Hunt’s return to K-1 and nominated him as the challenger of K-1 Super Heavyweight title held by Semmy Schilt. The match was held on 13 April 2008, in Yokohama, Japan at the K-1 World GP 2008 in Yokohama. Hunt lost the fight at the end of the first round by spinning back kick to the body.

COMMENTARY | It seems shocking to say that a fighter who has competed for and held titles and faced many of the biggest names in MMA history faces the biggest fight of his career in the co-main event of a relatively unheralded card against a mostly unknown opponent coming off of a loss. Yet that is exactly where things stand for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as he prepares to fight James Te Huna at Friday night’s UFC Fight Night 33: Hunt vs. Bigfoot.
Shogun enters the fight with his back against the wall, having lost two straight fights and three out of his last four. In fact, after joining the UFC in 2007 with a 16-2 record and regarded as one of the most feared fighters in all of MMA, Shogun has gone just 5-6 since. In fact, two of those wins came over Chuck Liddell and Mark Coleman, who were both well past their prime at the time of their fights with Rua.
As a result, Shogun faces a must-win situation against Te Huna on Friday if he wants to maintain whatever top-draw status his name still carries. A third straight loss would all but ensure that Rua will never get another chance at a big money fight (let alone another shot at a UFC title) and would put him at some risk of being released from the promotion. This desperation results not only from the threat of a third straight loss, but also because of the kind of loss it would be.
Shogun’s previous six losses inside the octagon have all come against fighters who either held the UFC Light Heavyweight Title or who challenged for it. Also, the loss against Dan Henderson in late 2011 is highly considered one of the greatest fights in MMA history. As a result, none of his past defeats carry the type of stigma on Rua’s record that would automatically lead one to conclude that he does not belong in the upper echelon of the division.
In contrast, and without any disrespect to James Te Huna, Shogun’s opponent on Friday is not currently in a position where he could be considered a contender in the light heavyweight division. Although he carries a 16-6 MMA record, Te Huna provided little resistance in bouts against Hector Lombard, Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira, which have been his three chances thus far against top-of-the-division type talent. Considering this, a win against Shogun would clearly be the biggest of the New Zealander’s career.
As a result, Te Huna also presents the biggest moment in Rua’s illustrious MMA career. One of two paths will be taken, as Shogun will either win and take a big step towards re-establishing himself as a contender in the light heavyweight division, or lose and be reduced to nothing more than “stepping stone” status where he either hangs around to serve as a gatekeeper for younger fighters or faces the threat of release. On account of this, it is fair to conclude that one of the greatest fighters in MMA history is at a crossroads that will decide where his career goes from here.
ny time two big, powerful heavyweights like Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva are set to clash, fans are going to take notice. Knockouts are what drives combat sports and there is a huge chance we’ll see one of these big guys go to sleep on Friday night.
Hunt and Silva are the main event for UFC Fight Night 33 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, but the main card is stacked with notable fighters.
Take a look at the full card, predictions and the viewing information for the event. Just beyond the matchups below is deeper analysis on the fights that have a good chance to earn Fight Night bonuses.
The man they call “The Dominican Nightmare” will make a splash in the UFC. Garcia is just 26 years old and he has a very well-rounded game. I’m predicting that his submission prowess will be the aspect that shines on Saturday.
He is facing another fighter making his UFC debut. Ben “Manimal” Wall is undefeated and has scored two of his wins by submission. While that is an impressive beginning to his career, he doesn’t have the experience of explosiveness in his takedowns that Garcia possesses.
Look for Garcia to overwhelm Wall with his speed and pursuit initially, but ultimately he’ll get him to the ground and win by submission. The Dominican Nightmare is an exciting prospect who has real star potential. You might just remember this performance as the first time you saw him fight after he’s won a title.
This guy has the goods.
KO of the Night: Mark Hunt’s Power Will Overwhelm Bigfoot
It’s kind of hard to pick between the main event and the Pat Barry vs. Soa Palelei fight, but I’d favor the main event because the KO is less likely to result from exhaustion. Palelei is strong as an ox, but his conditioning looked terrible against Nikita Krylov in his debut with the promotion at UFC 164.
Bigfoot is no easy win—unless, of course, you’re Cain Velasquez—but the Brazilian isn’t very fleet of foot. If Hunt’s opponents aren’t nimble, they’re forced to stand in front of him. I’m convinced no fighter can simply stand in close quarters and outslug Hunt.
Junior dos Santos didn’t do it. He moved around and showed his edge in athleticism to set up the decisive head kick. Silva doesn’t have that option and he’s going to pay the price for being too slow on Saturday.
Fight of the Night: The Villain Will Outlast Clint Hester
Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports
Fans should be excited to see this fight. Dylan “The Villain” Andrews is a rough customer from New Zealand who is well-rounded, but he loves to finish fights. He’ll have to be careful against Hester, though.
The latter is an explosive athlete with elite power. Both men are veterans of The Ultimate Fighter Season 17. They were teammates on Jon Jones’ team, but not on Saturday.
Hester was a bit of a disappointment during the show. After being Jones’ first selection, he was eliminated in the first match in the tournament. Andrews, ever the overachiever, made it to the semifinals after being picked last. He was stopped by runner-up, Uriah Hall.
When Andrews and Hester battle on Saturday, the same bug that bit Hester at TUF will bite him again. Andrews’ game is more well-rounded and he’ll take Hester to the ground for a submission. Along the way, we should see some pretty exciting striking. No one can take Hester’s strikes consistently, but Andrews is going to remind fans how tough he is in this one.
